Fundraising for Wheels at Work

Having supported lots of local businesses and schools take part in the Wheels at Work fundraising campaign for Stoke Mandeville Spinal Research Charity we are delighted that one of our own colleagues is taking on the challenge to spend not just a day, but a weekend in a wheelchair in which he will also be entering Newark Dog Show with his prize winning Shiba Inu Dog. Joe Slaughter, one of our Technicians based in Aylesbury is keen to support the charity, but also discover for himself some of the challenges that wheelchair users face on a daily basis. JOINING THE DOTS

JOINING THE DOTS

Back Up is the charity for everyone affected by spinal cord injury and their new "Join the Dot" wheelchair skills sessions have been a huge success.

Delivered in partnership with Gerald Simonds and Irwin Mitchell, "Join the Dots" provides community-based wheelchair skills training, helping people with spinal cord injury to master the skills needed to get around. With the right support from Back Up, people can learn to ‘Join the Dots’ and navigate their city safely.

An interview with Sir Frank Williams, head of the Williams F1 racing team, on the benefits of standing.

When a friend gave the young Frank Williams a ride in his Jaguar XK150 in the late 1950s he didn't know what he was starting. In 1966 his young passenger went on to found Frank Williams Racing Cars to compete in Formula Two and Formula Three then, in 1977, together with one of his employees, engineer Patrick Head, he announced the formation of Williams Grand Prix Engineering. Now known as WilliamsF1 and based in Oxfordshire, the same team still competes in Formula One and has had many years of success, winning seven Drivers' championships and nine Constructors championships, making them the third most successful F1 team in history after Ferrari and McLaren.

Partnering with Back Up to Join the Dots

Partnering with Back Up to Join the Dots

We are pleased to be partnering with Back Up to support "Join the Dots", their community based wheelchair skills training programme. Back Up is the national charity that works to transform the lives of hundreds of people after spinal cord injury and, with "Join the Dots", individuals learn to use wheelchair skills to join the dots from point A to B in local towns and cities near spinal units. With the right support and training, chair users can reclaim their independence and build up their confidence safely within their community. As well as sponsoring "Join the Dots", we will be providing Back Up service users with a discount for their wheelchairs.

Chasing the Dragon

The Red Kites, a team from Gerald Simonds, took part in the recent Dragon Boat Races held at the Docklands Sailing and Watersports Centre in London. The event was held in aid of Back-Up, the charity devoted to transforming lives after spinal cord injury, and teams from thirteen organisations, including city banks and solicitors took part.

After a briefing which covered paddling technique and safety on the water, the Red Kites boarded their Dragon boat for their first heat, headed for the start line and managed to come first! After the first round of races the Red Kites were placed fourth overall and made it into the ‘top six’ final where they finished the event a creditable fifth overall. The team were especially pleased to improve their timings significantly in each race.
